BGS Warrington was contacted by Lancashire Teaching Hospitals (NHS Foundation Trust) following damage to existing roller shutter doors at their site in Royal Preston Hospital. An initial site assessment confirmed that the existing installation was beyond repair. BGS engineers recommended and quoted for full replacement and consolidation of the opening into a single electrically operated roller shutter. Following approval of quote, the existing damaged shutters were safely removed and a new tubular motor roller shutter was installed and commissioned. The installation was completed by BGS engineers Kris and Karl.
The existing roller shutters had sustained significant impact damage. Both curtain assemblies were deformed, guide channels were distorted, motor had failed, and canopy had been severely damaged. The works were carried out within a live hospital environment, requiring strict control of access, working practices, and site conduct. Noise, dust, obstruction, and disruption to surrounding operations had to be minimised at all times. The work area needed to be secured safely during removal activities and returned to service promptly.
Following assessment, BGS recommended full replacement due to the extent of structural and mechanical damage. A single electric tube operated roller shutter was installed to replace the two existing shutters. This approach reduced mechanical complexity, simplified control arrangements, and ensured long-term reliability and maintainability. The selected door configuration provided adequate operational coverage for the opening while reducing the number of moving components and potential failure points. Motor capacity and control specification were matched to duty requirements and site usage. The new installation restored secure access, and the site was handed back in a safe and operational condition.
